The first issue was that my installation apparently defaulted to a version of GHC that's not supported by HLS (9.2.5). I created test projects with both cabal and stack, but the debugger just doesn't seem to work. So far, so good, but I just couldn't get it to actually work. Then I noticed that extension doesn't seem to have a REPL or support for debugging, so I also installed the Haskell GHCi Debug Adapter extension. I followed the recommendations on and installed GHCup, and then using that installed GHC, cabal, stack, and the haskell language server, and then I installed the Haskell extension for VS Code. I'm not interested in using emacs or vim, so VS Code it is. Most people seem to recommend emacs, vim, or VS Code as their editor for Haskell. What I'm looking for is basic IDE features (completion, inline error messages, docs on hover, etc), a REPL, and/or a debugger.
